How Should You Store a Crispycake?

How Should You Store a Crispycake?

So you ordered a giant, soft and gooey Crispycake and somehow managed not to eat the entire thing immediately.

First of all, impressive.

Second, now what?

One of the questions we get about Crispycakes is how they should be stored, especially since they're a little different from the crispy treats you might make at home. The good news is that Crispycakes are incredibly easy to store. There are just a couple of things you definitely don't want to do.

And the biggest one is putting them in the refrigerator.

Keep It Wrapped and Keep It Simple

If you're not planning to eat your Crispycake right away, the best thing you can do is pretty much nothing.

Leave it in its original wrapper and keep it at a normal room temperature. A kitchen counter, pantry, or cupboard is perfectly fine. You don't need a special container, and you definitely don't need to make room in the refrigerator.

Crispycakes aren't particularly temperamental. They just don't love extreme temperatures in either direction.

Too cold and that wonderfully soft marshmallow starts getting hard. Too hot and the marshmallow can begin to dissipate, which changes the texture that makes a Crispycake a Crispycake.

Room temperature is the sweet spot.

Please Don't Refrigerate Your Crispycake

We know refrigeration feels like the natural way to keep food fresh longer, but Crispycakes are different.

There is no need to refrigerate them.

In fact, cold temperatures will make the marshmallow hard, which is pretty much the exact opposite of what we're going for. We make Crispycakes to be soft and gooey, so putting one in the refrigerator isn't preserving the experience. It's changing it.

The same goes for the freezer, only more so.

Do not freeze your Crispycakes.

Unless your goal is to turn your soft and gooey treat into something resembling a brick, the freezer is not your friend.

How Long Do Crispycakes Stay Fresh?

Our Crispycakes have an 11-month shelf life, but there's an important distinction we want to make here.

A shelf life tells you how long a product remains suitable to eat without significant degradation. It doesn't mean we think you should buy a Crispycake today, hide it in your pantry for 10 months, and expect it to taste exactly like it did when it left our bakery.

We bake our Crispycakes using fresh ingredients, and for the best experience, we recommend enjoying them within about one to two months of ordering.

That's when you're going to get the texture and flavor closest to what we intended when we made it.

Of course, considering the amount of restraint required to keep a Crispycake around for two months, this usually isn't much of a problem.

What If You've Already Opened It?

You don't have to eat an entire Crispycake in one sitting.

In fact, this happens in our own house all the time. Our son will have a Crispycake for dessert, cut off a small piece, put the rest into a zip-top bag, and come back for another piece the next night. We've found that it stays soft throughout the week when stored that way.

Once the original wrapper has been opened, exposure to air will eventually cause the Crispycake to get a little harder. So if you're saving some for later, put it in a zip-top bag and seal it up between snacks.

Simple as that.

Can You Microwave a Crispycake to Make It Soft Again?

We've heard from customers who do this!

Some people have told us they'll give a Crispycake that's been open for a while a very quick zap in the microwave to soften it back up.

We haven't actually tested this ourselves, so consider this a customer tip rather than official Crispycake science. But if you're going to try it, we'd start very small, somewhere around 3 to 5 seconds at a time, and see how it goes.

The goal is soft and gooey, not molten marshmallow.

What About Crispycakes With Chocolate?

You might be wondering how all of this works with Crispycakes that contain chocolate, especially during warmer weather.

We actually handle that problem before your order ever leaves us.

Crispycakes with chocolate components that are at risk of melting are only shipped during the cooler months. We intentionally pause those products when hot weather could cause problems in transit.

We could theoretically ship them with ice packs, but there's one pretty major problem with that solution: cold isn't a Crispycake's friend either.

We'd rather offer those particular Crispycakes seasonally than risk compromising the soft and gooey texture we're trying to protect in the first place.

The Crispycake Storage Cheat Sheet

Thankfully, this is about as uncomplicated as food storage gets.

Unopened? Keep it in its wrapper at room temperature.

Opened? Put the rest in a zip-top bag and seal it between bites.

Refrigerator? Nope.

Freezer? Definitely nope.

Counter or cupboard? Perfect.

Best time to eat it? We recommend within one to two months for the best flavor and texture, even though Crispycakes have an 11-month shelf life.

Crispycakes really don't ask for much. Keep them wrapped, keep them away from extreme temperatures, and try to resist eating the whole thing the second the box arrives.

That last part might be the hardest storage instruction of all.
