Why Are Rice Crispy Treats So Nostalgic?

There are certain foods you can taste once and immediately feel like you're eight years old again.

For a lot of us, rice crispy treats are one of them.

Maybe you remember making them at home and eating one before they had completely cooled. Maybe they showed up at birthday parties, bake sales, sleepovers, or in your lunchbox. Or maybe you just remember standing over a pan and trying to decide which corner piece was the biggest.

Whatever the memory is, there's something about crispy cereal and gooey marshmallow that has managed to stick around for generations.

And we think nostalgia is a big reason why.

Those memories became inspiration for some of our most popular Crispycake flavors.

Cookies & Cream takes that familiar cookie-and-cream combination and works it into a thick marshmallow Crispycake.

S'Mores brings together graham cracker, marshmallow, and chocolate without requiring anyone to build a fire.

And Fruity Crispies taps into the colorful, fruity cereal nostalgia that immediately makes some people think about sitting in front of Saturday morning cartoons with a bowl of Fruity Pebbles.

The flavors are different, but the idea behind them is pretty similar.

Take something you remember loving and turn it into something you want to eat now.

Why Does Food Bring Back So Many Memories?

Taste and smell have a funny way of connecting us to specific moments.

You can go years without thinking about a particular food, then taste it again and suddenly remember the kitchen where you ate it, the people you were with, or a completely random afternoon from childhood.

We've made a lot of unusual Crispycakes over the years, and we're always thinking about what flavor we should try next.

But there's something funny about all that experimentation.

No matter how creative we get, Plain & Sweet remains our bestseller.

Maybe that shouldn't surprise us.

Sometimes people want chocolate, cookies, fruity cereal, peanut butter, or whatever new flavor catches their eye.

And sometimes they just want a really, really good marshmallow crispy treat.

That's the beauty of nostalgia. You can dress it up, make it giant, and give it a gourmet bakery spin, but the thing people loved in the first place is still there.

Maybe That's Why Crispy Treats Never Really Go Away

Plenty of desserts have had their moment and disappeared.

Rice crispy treats haven't.

Kids still love them. Adults still love them. Parents make them with their children after remembering making them when they were kids themselves.

That's a pretty impressive run for something made from cereal and marshmallow.

Some things really don't need to grow up.
